Croucher Brewing's 'Nuclear Free ANZUS IPA'
ANZUS was a military alliance between Australia (A), New Zealand (NZ) and the United States (US) that commenced in 1951 in the shadow of the developing Cold War.
With the South Pacific being used as a testing ground for nuclear bombs by France in the 1980's, an Anti-Nuclear sentiment was growing strongly in NZ. In 1984 the New Zealand Government barred Nuclear powered or nuclear armed vessels from visiting our shores. As the US Navy refused to confirm or deny the presence of nuclear weapons aboard its ships, and with a port visit by the USS Buchanan refused by NZ in early 1985, the US Government announced it was suspending its treaty obligations to New Zealand. The 'No Nukes' sentiment in NZ became even firmer following the bombing of the 'Rainbow Warrior' Greenpeace ship in Auckland on July 10, 1985, committed by French Government agents.
On the 1st of March 1985, New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange addressed the Oxford Union Debate arguing 'Nuclear Weapons Are Morally Indefensible', where in reply to a question by a frustrated opposition made the now infamous quote "If you hold your breath just for a moment... I can smell the uranium on it as you lean towards me...". Below is the video footage of David Lange's contribution to the Oxford Union Debate, and it is simply sensational!
